C: What You Need to Know About the Link Between Oral and Written Language Skills: A Speech-Language Pathologist's Perspective

Before looking at remediation of reading and writing skills, it is important to consider possible difficulties a child has in the foundations of oral language and language awareness. Susan Bernstein works closely with families and schools and will share information that parents need to know about the important connections between oral and written language skills. Specific strategies designed to help students with language skills will be an important part of this informative workshop.

Biographical Information

Susan Bernstein is a registered speech-language pathologist with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario. She received her Masters of Health Science degree in 1986, and her Honours Bachelor of Science degree, specializing in psychology, in 1984, both at the University of Toronto. Susan has worked for the Peel District School Board since 1986, with students aged 5-14 years, who have communication disorders. She has held a specialist position consulting to schools with Communication Centres, where direct instruction is provided to reading-disabled students in contained classes. Susan was the project leader in developing the Sound Skills Resources, designed to help teachers facilitate young students’ development of language awareness skills to promote literacy learning. Susan has given presentations throughout the province to help school boards implement this important tool. Susan is committed to working with families and schools to ensure that students have access to early and on-going intervention based on research-based practice, especially in the areas of oral language development, phonological awareness, reading and writing.
